The word “ARTA” on his stomach is short for his original street gang, Artesia 13.

Rene at the age of about fourteen had already

been jumped into Artesia 13 despite warnings

from his father to “stay away from those

hoodlums.” By this age he was a hard-core

user of PCP, had a lucrative business selling

the drug to other junior high students, and

often woke up in a drug-induced haze.
